So maybe I have to go back to Iraq, and maybe I don't. If everything that was said Wednesday night pans out, I'm willing. I believe, as do most soldiers, that if we were allowed to do our job with minimal interference from the media and the politicians, we could get Baghdad under control in about eighteen months.
Don't get me wrong, we will have to compromise with AlSadr and his bunch ( he'll get his eventually) and probably others of the same ilk. I believe that the words that the president said the other night sounded better than other words he has spoken. The words are good, and the source, well, he means well. The new guy in charge in Iraq is competent. The new SecDef is...not Rumsfeld, so what the heck.
You see, I can't get away from the idea that we can still come away from this situation with a new perspective as a nation. I know that we are sick of Vietnam comparisons, but pay attention anyway.
The thing that Korea, Vietnam, Somalia, and Iraq have in common is this-America did not "win". We may have stopped, we may have backed off, we may have forced a "cease fire" even, but we never won. We haven't really won a war since WW2. Examine this statement. Think it over and see if you can't figure out the root cause.
I want to win. I want to remind the world that we are the toughest SOBs on the block. Its not about politics, its about respect. If we can't follow through on one thing for 60 years, they are going to get the idea that they can attack us here at home, killing thousands and disrupting our lives...Oh, wait...
For the love of Mike (hi Mike), let's just win one already. I'm willing to go if you're willing to let me kick some ass. These people wipe their butts with their hands, for crying out loud. We can take them. Let our soldiers win.
Come on, let's go, follow me...

Really, America?...

give me my rifle and turn me loose. no cameras, no retarded roe's, just a mission, men, and guns. its highly motivated infantry soldiers that produce the best results in a battlefield. politics and talking produce nothing but empty promises and new, improved ways of lying to one another. nobody questioned the body count in somalia back in '91. to the 18 us soldiers killed, and 73 wounded, the elite of our nation killed more than 1000 somalian fighters and wounded more than 3000. 18 to thousands. you want to win a war, get the politics out of it. ban the media from entering. and let the bullets fly.
It IS about respect. No matter what anyone thinks about our reasons for being there, or the way we've fought the war until now, the fact remains that we have to finish what we started. If we don't, we can't expect any respect from anyone on the planet.
